Job Summary

It is very rare to find an Organisation Development (OD) role like this one. The OD team at Standard Chartered is trusted by our top executive to help create real and sustainable change.  This means that we can work at the cutting edge, using innovative approaches and experimenting with new ideas to push the boundaries of what is possible.

Most organisations look for external consultants and gurus to advise and work with their C Suite.  At Standard Chartered this is the role of our OD team.  Whereas OD practitioners in many organisations find themselves project managing third parties, our team have direct access to our most senior leaders, designing and delivering interventions themselves with the opportunity to have real influence within the organisation.

SCB is a unique cross border bank and affluent wealth manager. Our geographical footprint places us in the world’s fastest growing economies, and our purpose points to making a real difference to the communities we serve. We are a human bank, characterised by strong relationships and a genuine desire to do the right thing.  We are Here for Good.

You will be an experienced OD practitioner, looking to make a real difference and willing to push the boundaries and grow your skills to do so. This means:
•    Living our Valued Behaviours of “Do the right thing”, “Never settle” and “Better Together” on a day-to-day basis whilst seeking opportunities for self-development and growth.
•    Having a strategic and commercial mindset and the ability to navigate complex situations and ambiguity.
•    Knowing how to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders and being able to work across multiple cultures.

Key Responsibilities

Business

You will work with business leaders to understand their needs and to design and deliver interventions to make their organisations more effective.  This can range from senior team development or large group intervention and facilitation to systemic change initiatives or 1:1 coaching.  While most of your clients will be UK based, their organisations are likely to reach across our footprint and so most of your work will have an international dimension to it.

We work as a highly supportive team, drawing on each other’s strengths and collaborating to do the very best for our clients.  We like to see our colleagues in the wider HR organisation as an extension of that team and we work closely with them to ensure that our work is sustainable in the long term.

We are serious about change and transformation; we have the backing and support of our CEO and his team, and we are adventurous and creative in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in organisational development.  If you join us, you will join a supportive team of world class professionals and:

  • Work at the leading edge of your field, partnering with the best of the external world and applying the latest thinking.

  • Be able to innovate and try out new approaches and methodologies. This is an organisation which has a track record of investing in innovative approaches.

  • Be able to work independently, while being able to draw on others’ expertise and insight when you need it.

  • Feel able to make a real impact to an organisation which is passionate about making a difference in the communities in which it operates.

  • Grow, develop and learn.  Our task is too large to deliver based on our current skills and abilities.  We are committed to developing ourselves and each other.

Strategy

Our Approach

  • We believe in a data driven, evidence-based, human-centred approach to OD.  We are rigorous in our diagnostic and innovative in our design.  We believe in working in partnership with our clients, building strong trusting relationships, evidenced and two-way challenge and feedback.

  • As a relatively small team, we make use of external partners where and when it makes sense, bringing them in for specific expertise or to cover work where we have insufficient capacity.   We are also keen to build capacity and self-sufficiency within the organisation and so we sometimes choose to train others to do the delivery rather than doing it ourselves.

  • Many teams talk about their values.  We live ours.  Our Valued Behaviours – Do the Right Thing, Never Settle and Better Together underpin how we behave within the team and how we work with our clients, partners, and colleagues.

People & Talent

  • Being an inspirational developer of others who looks for opportunities to grow others, develop talent, give clarity and guidance, drive purpose, and enhance decision quality across the team.

Our Ideal Candidate

This is a hands-on senior practitioner role and successful candidates will have extensive experience of designing and delivering group interventions themselves, rather than project managing others to do so. You will need to be passionate about developing leaders, teams, and broader systemic and cultural change.  To thrive in the role, you will need 20+ years experience in:

  • A designer and facilitator of group interventions. You will work with intact teams helping them to get along and get ahead, you’ll deliver structured learning programmes, and you will also be running large group interventions.  You’ll need a practical understanding of how individuals and organisations learn, grow and develop and a wide repertoire of processes and methodologies to help them do this.

  • Expertise in cultural transformation.  Our work takes place in the context and service of cultural change.  Your extensive experience of transforming cultures in complex organisations will be important. You will want to bring systems thinking to your work, so that you can explore the full complexity that lies behind the issues with which you are presented and identify the things which will truly make a difference. You will know how to build partnerships with others, helping them to operate independently and creating change which is sustainable.

  • Coaching skills and advisory experience. You may not have a formal coaching qualification, but you do need to have the practical skills and the depth of experience to gain credibility quickly and to be effective in coaching and/or advising individual senior leaders who are operating in a complex and changing environment.

  • Commitment to data and evidence. We want our work to make a real difference – to our clients, our people and our communities.  To do that, we use data, both qualitative and quantitative.  It gives us the insight we need to get our diagnosis right and to design our interventions for maximum impact.  It also allows us to show evidence that change is happening.  It’s not about data for data’s sake, but about finding the right balance between data and intuition, and creativity with rigour.
